SUMMARY:Conference IAH entitled: Groundwater drought and abstraction in Europe
DESCRIPTION:Groundwater drought and abstraction in Europe: sustainability now and in the future? Conference given by Anne Van Loon\n\n\nIn this study\, we present the results of the analysis of groundwater droughts induced and modified by groundwater abstractioncompared to a near-natural baseline. We show that abstraction can lower groundwaterlevels to below drought thresholds in summers with high demand (during heatwaves)\, but these human-induced droughts are quickly alleviated in our wet NW European climate. However\, under climate change and increased water demand scenarios\, we might want toadopt a revised abstraction plan to prevent these human-induced groundwater droughts\, in order to minimise longer-term impacts on groundwater storage and alleviate potential delays in drought recovery. With a conceptual model\, we test under which conditions additional abstractions push the groundwater system into longer drought and how a short-term sustainable abstraction plan can prevent this. In the context of the European Groundwater Drought Initiative (GDI)\, we compare different climates and groundwater use and management scenarios in Europe. We conclude that for safeguarding Europe’s drinking water supply (c 65% from groundwater)\, management strategies need to consider short-term sustainability of groundwater abstraction to ensure future water availability.\n\nAprès la réunion\, un verre de l’amitié sera servi.\n\nPour l’organisation pratique de la réunion\, nous vous demandons de confirmer votre présence en remplissant ce formulaire avant le 10 janvier 2020: https://forms.gle/QDPEXVb5oacfhTD26\n\nSi vous désirez apporter un point à l’ordre du jour de l’AG\, vous avez la possibilité de le mentionner dans le formulaire.

SUMMARY:Symposium Mineral Extraction vs Ecology
DESCRIPTION:Symposium co-organised by Geologica Belgica and BLUG/UBLG on 24 November 2016 in Brussels\, Natural History Museum \nAfter a workshop organised 27 November 2015 and a series of excursions to different types of raw materials extraction conducted this year\, the ad-hoc working group observed that former or reclaimed mining sites regain valuable ecological functions and may even attain a higher level of biodiversity than the original lands before mining. Multiple former extraction sites are transformed into Natura 2000 or other protected sites\, or even are becoming new wilderness areas. The ad-hoc working group has concluded that mining and ecology should become allies and agreed to the organisation of a symposium\, with the intention to promote a better understanding of the mutual interests by the industry and the conservationists and at informing a wider audience.
